Killarney, County Kerry, has been welcoming visitors for 250 years and is known for its breath-taking beauty and lively town. Due to its location, it is a great base to explore the rest of Kerry. Killarney town is family friendly, and you can also explore the scenic beauty of Killarney National Park which is home to 26,000 acres of lakes, mountains, waterfalls, and Ireland’s highest mountain range McGillycuddy’s Reeks.

In Killarney town you can enjoy the local ice cream, a shopping trip or even go to a local bar. There is an array of dining options as well including fish restaurants, family friendly spots and even ones that are more suitable for couples.

Killarney National park

When in Killarney National Park, make sure to visit the Muckross House and Gardens, which is a 19th Century Victorian Mansion, located on one of Killarney’s lakes. Other popular tourist attractions include Ross Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral or you can even hire a boat out to Innisfallen Island. Scenic Viewing Points

Killarney is a great spot for photographers due to the wide range of scenic locations and viewing points. The most popular spot is Aghadoe Viewing Point, Ladies View, which can be accessed on the N71 towards Kenmare. It is on top of the Gap of Dunloe, located between MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Purple Mountain. Another must see is Torc Waterfall. It is 20 metres high and even better when there has been heavy rainfall the night before.

Best Events in Killarney

Killarney also has a very busy event calendar. If you are looking to see musicians and comedians, then the Gleneagle INEC Arena is the place to be. Killarney’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations are worth going to, with the highlight being the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Later in March, the Wander Wild Festival occurs which is a weekend of outdoor activities, and the Ireland Bike Fest takes place each year on the June Bank Holiday Weekend. If you are looking to celebrate the 4th of July, then look no further! Killarney has fireworks and a parade which is great for families. Killarney Racecourse also has a busy schedule with races happening through the summer months of May, July and August. Finally, Christmas in Killarney shouldn’t be missed. The town becomes festive with a Christmas Parade occurring every Saturday.
